OUR MISSION The mission of Westwood Presbyterian Church is to open its doors as Christ opened His heart, to love people for who they are just as they come. We will care for our present and future members, recognizing their contributions, and, at the same time, providing opportunities for meaningful change. As the story of God’s relationship with His people changed slowly from the Old Testament to the New Testament, so shall we work to change in a slow and appropriate manner. Therefore, Westwood Presbyterian Church is a fellowship of believers that works to reach; teach; care and share in the good news of Jesus Christ in the historic and proud tradition of the Presbyterian heritage.
Goals of the Session, 2010 Developed at the Annual Session Retreat, 16 January 2010
As the Session of Westwood Presbyterian Church, we will:
1.) Focus all our activities to the service and worship of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is Lord of the Church. This is our chief and highest goal.
2.) Create a special Evangelism Task Force to research, explore and come up with a plan for leading our congregation’s evangelism and outreach. As the Church of Jesus Christ, we have been given His Gospel, His Light, His Good News. We cannot and will not hide that light under a bushel!
3.) Seek to “beef up” our congregation’s prayer ministries. We recognize the need to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We hope to lead the congregation to get more involved in our prayer groups, our prayer chain, etc. We also hope to find other ways to put prayer at the center of our life together.
4.) Be good stewards of the property and grounds God has given us. We encourage our members to take responsibility for Westwood’s property, hoping that they will treat it as well as they would their own homes.
5.) Continue to find ways to improve our congregation’s finances. To this end, we will develop a plan to pay off our 50th Anniversary loan by 2012. We will also seek to establish an endowment program for our church by highlighting the importance of remembering Westwood in our wills.
6.) Seek ways to encourage the mission and outreach program of this congregation. We are still committed to achieving our goal of giving 10% of our revenue to missions. We recognize that this goal is reached both through monetary and in-kind giving.
7.) Continue to encourage variety in our worship services together. We recognize the need to keep our worship fresh and vital. We also will be deliberate in organizing a variety of special fellowship and nurture events for the congregation this year.
8.) Have a Minute for Mission during worship at least once each month to promote and highlight the ministries, activities and outreach opportunities available at Westwood.
9.) Hold true to sound Biblical teaching, even if it may not be politically correct or culturally chic.
10.) Refer to these goals and to the vows we took as ordained elders at least quarterly, so as to not lose sight of what God is calling us to do for His Kingdom. To Him be all glory and honor in His Church!
